Paper Abstract

In this document we describe the design of FilmPlane2, its user interface and implementation. The underlying mental model of the workstation design is that of a virtual electronic view box. Viewed "from a distance" the whole view box can be seen, but with only in rough detail. Viewed "from up close", individual images can be seen at full resolution. The system provides a natural way to determine which images show up in the "up close" view. Additional features allow for sequential and nonsequential access to images, measuring anatomical features, contrast adjustment, and limited zooming. FilmPlane2 is being implemented using X Windows and C++. The full system is designed to run on a Stellar graphics workstation with three 1280x1024 greyscale display screens, as well as Sun and DEC workstations. The system can be adapted to an arbitrary number of display screens.
