Paper Abstract

Surface topography is one of the fundamental measurements required to understand the structure and evolution of planetary bodies. Specifically, topographic data constitute an important input into a variety of studies in geophysics, geology, and atmospheric circulation. Topog raphic measurements with long-wavelength integrity provide a basis for interpreting the gravity field and determining the internal structure, state of stress and isostatic compensation of planetary lithospheres. Regional-scale topography and derived topographic gradients are required in geological investigations of fluid and lava flow, erosion, volcanic and impact processes. In addition, topography provides an important constraint on global atmospheric circulation models.
