CIE color space and IT8 at work: a quantitative analysis of color matching from scanner to print in a production environment

Paper Abstract

I shall describe an approach to Device Independent Color Transformations using standard input and output targets specified by the ANSI-IT8 group. This approach allows colorimetric calibration from input scanners into CIE-XYZ color space and to various output processes like color prints in a production environment. A quantitative error analysis is presented for the suitability of a variety of input scanners as colorimeters as well as a detailed look at possible problem areas on the scanning side. A precise control flow has to be established and followed for repeatable results, especially if the scanners are capable of producing more than 8 bits per color channel. An equivalent analysis is made for the output side with selected colors being followed through the entire system from input to output.
