Paper Abstract

Small bits of rabbit hepatic tissue were irradiated with CW Nd:YAG laser at powers of 5 - 45 W and auto-grafted subcutaneously together with unaffected (control), boiled or frozen-thawed samples of the same weight. Unlike control and cryo-processed grafts, which showed moderate local inflammation and swift resolution of the transplants with phagocytes, high power-lased samples provoked long-term purulent reaction around the graft without appreciable phagocytic scavenging of the debris by phagocytic cells. At lower powers and after boiling of the samples the scavenging was less inhibited and the resolution of the debris took shorter durations. In the biochemical series high resistance of rat liver homogenates to pancreatic proteinases was demonstrated in high power Nd:YAG vs. XeCl excimer, mixed Nd:YAG + XeCl excimer lased as well as US-processed samples after their incubation in proteolytic media. The results obtained suggest that the resistance of necrotic debris to phagocytic scavenging in the wound may be an important parameter responsible for local recovery, and that parameter is strongly dependent on the damaging factor, either laser or an alternative surgical tool, applied.
