Panel Discussion on National and Transnational Networks of Intense Laser Facilities: Impact for Science and User Communities
Tuesday 13 August 2019
2:50 PM - 3:50 PM

Moderators:
Annie Klisnick, Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d'Orsay (France)
Carmen S. Menoni, Colorado State Univ. (USA)

Panelists:
Sylvie Jacquemot, Lab. pour l'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses (France)
Jorge J. Rocca, Colorado State Univ. (USA)
Chang Hee Nam, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (Korea, Republic of)

Intense laser facilities are instrumental for the development of advanced coherent and incoherent x-ray sources and their applications in basic science or society. To complement the existing capabilities there are currently large concerted efforts worldwide to build new petawatt- or multi-petawatt-class optical lasers. They will pave the way to next-generation radiation and particle sources and to cutting-edge research at ultrahigh intensities. To ensure that these unique infrastructures benefit to a broad spectrum of user communities, several national and transnational networks of intense laser facilities have been established independently in Europe, Asia, and in the United States. Their motivation is to facilitate pooling of know-how and best practices between infrastructures, and to promote access offers to users from both academia and industry. The goal of this round table discussion is thus to:
  • present the existing networks
  • discuss opportunities offered to SPIE's user communities and beyond
  • discuss possible joint actions for optimizing the scientific and societal impact of intense laser facilities.
