BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA -- The SPIE Digital Library is pleased to announce that its Proceedings of SPIE has ranked among leading journals for the third quarter in a row, as one of the 50 most-used of 50,000 journals in the world.

The SPIE Proceedings, which comprise much of the SPIE Digital Library contents, rank among the top 50 most-used journals out of 50,000 analyzed in the Ex Libris bX Journal Popularity Report. The report covers all the sciences and is based on the usage of millions of researchers from numerous institutions around the world.

Craig Mackay, professor of image science at the University of Cambridge, is a frequent SPIE Digital Library user: "I need to be able to access research papers in a wide range of technological fields which are best covered by the SPIE conference proceedings and journals. I use the Digital Library several times per month and my activities would be significantly constrained and complicated would I not have access. I can see why colleagues in other sciences are also valuing this broad content so highly."

"As an optics researcher and educator, I have long relied on the SPIE Proceedings as an incredibly rich and reliable resource," said SPIE Publications Committee Chair John Greivenkamp. "I am not surprised to see the SPIE Proceedings consistently attracting the highest usage of any optics publication, but it was unexpected and exciting to see the SPIE Proceedings listed among the world's top journals from all fields. The Ex Libris usage ranking adds an important insight that is often overlooked in other publishing metrics, emphasizing the value and utility that the SPIE Proceedings provides to the R&D and educational community."

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The Society serves nearly 225,000 constituents from approximately 150 countries, offering conferences, continuing education, books, journals, and a digital library in support of interdisciplinary information exchange, professional growth, and patent precedent. SPIE provided over $2.7 million in support of education and outreach programs in 2011.
