For over eight years, SPIE has produced a planner for the benefit of women working in, and with interest in, the fields of science and engineering. This planner includes photos and interesting facts about women who are making a difference through their work and other contributions to the fields of science, optics and engineering. Seven thousand (7,000) copies of the planner are printed and distributed, free of charge, in more than 25 countries worldwide.
When this planner was first presented in 2005, it was intended to promote the work of women in the field of optics. While it still achieves the original goal of supporting female scientists, it has grown to become a tool for introducing girls and young women to the possibilities of careers in all sciences, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Each year, the increasing demand for this planner has demonstrated that there is great interest in learning about women in the sciences, and the need for female role models in technical fields is clear.
