SPIE Member William Whelan (Univ. of Prince Edward Island) is working towards a new diagnostic and therapeutic technology for prostate cancer by implanting optical fibers to a tumor and heating it to 55 degrees Celsius.
Whelan's lab is also generating similar techniques that could lead to early cancer detection by detecting different sound frequencies of tumor cells.
Whelan authored 20 papers in the SPIE Digital Library, and has one paper scheduled to be presented at SPIE Photonics West 2012 in January. He has been on a session chair at three different Photonics West sections. He will be the chair of "In Vivo Preclinical Imaging" at the next SPIE Photonics West.
