Evaluations

SPIE Course Evaluation forms are inserted into the front of each set of course notes. An optical reader scans them, so attendees should use blue or black ink to complete the form. These forms serve to provide feedback to instructors and SPIE. Attendees may also used them to request CEU credit.

Instructors are asked to encourage students to complete the course evaluation form, so please plan to allow 5 to 10 minutes at the end of class for this purpose. Ask participants to place their completed evaluations in the specially marked bins in the hallway or return them to the Course Materials Desk. The faster we receive them, the faster we can get your evaluations summarized and returned to you. It is difficult and time consuming to track down attendees for their evaluation after the meeting has concluded.

Please encourage your attendees to include their name or email if they feel comfortable doing so. SPIE may want to follow up with them after the course and this information is helpful to have.

Remember, a strong evaluation response from attendees is your best assurance of SPIE offering your course in the future!

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

SPIE is an authorized provider of CEUs for short course attendees and so it is important that all courses conform to the standards established by IACET- The International Association for Continuing Education and Training.

In order to obtain CEUs, attendees must complete the evaluation form that rates instructor knowledge, course organization and content, quality of materials, and whether or not learning outcomes were met. These aspects are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being optimal. SPIE requires that instructors maintain a course average of 4.0 or better in order to be considered for inclusion in future educational programs.

In addition to providing required verification for CEU credits, the evaluation form supplies meaningful information to you and to SPIE for planning future programs. Attendees are strongly encouraged to also provide written feedback in the comments section of the evaluation, as this is frequently the most valuable input for both the instructor and SPIE.

A "Green Lab" program supported by SPIE at the Pennsylvania State Univ. Electro-Optics Center gives high-school students lab experience in analyzing power consumption incandescent, compact fluorescent, and LED lighting sources.

"The lab inspires students to think about the environment and the economy," said Jim Einsporn of the Penn State project. "Students discover first-hand the amount of energy used in each source, and the long-term costs of each."
