Biomedical Optics

Biomedical optics includes research, inspection, diagnostics, and therapy of biological tissues using light-based technologies in medicine and the life sciences. Biomedical optics studies and utilizes emerging technologies in biophotonics, BioMEMs and microfluidics, lasers, fiber optics, optoelectronic devices, biological and chemical sensing, phototherapy, optical microscopy, medical imaging systems, and biomedical image processing. It encompasses biometrics to DNA sequencing to in-vitro diagnostics. SPIE sponsors the annual Biomedical Optics symposium at Photonics West in San Francisco, the largest meeting of its kind, and publishes the Journal of Biomedical Optics (JBO).
