Univ. of Central Florida chemists led by SPIE Member Kevin Belfield have used near-infrared light and fluorescent dye to take pictures of cells and tumors deep within tissue. The new technique using near-infrared light is enabling scientists to look deeper into the guts of cells, potentially opening up a new frontier in the fight against cancer and many other diseases.
The probes specifically target lysosomes, which act as cells' thermostats and waste processors and which have been linked to many diseases, including types of mental illnesses and cancers.
Belfield has presented numerous papers on medical imaging at SPIE Photonics West and is a member of the program committee for the Linear and Nonlinear Optics of Organic Materials conference at SPIE Optics+Photonics.
