Video interview: Frank Wise on femtosecond laser research
Frank Wise is director of the School of Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). His current research interests include femtosecond techniques for imaging deep in tissue, and high-energy femtosecond fiber lasers.
The Wise Research Group at Cornell studies semiconductor nanocrystals and ultrafast optical physics. The ultrafast optics team is currently focused on nonlinear wave propagation and the generation of new kinds of soliton pulses in fiber lasers and space-time solitons ("light bullets") in three dimensions.
Wise was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories before coming to Cornell. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1988, and was named an NSF Presidential Young Investigator in 1989. He has received several awards for excellence and innovation in teaching. In 2007 he was appointed as director of the School of Applied and Engineering Physics.
