GE boosts solar power production

General Electric aims to ramp up production of solar power panels by early next year in a crucial step in the company's bid to transform its initial investments in the renewable energy field into a multibillion-dollar business.

GE made its initial solar foray in 2004 hoping to lower production costs enough to make solar another affordable source of alternative energy. However, unlike the conglomerate's wind power operations, the development of GE's solar business has been muted, with annual sales at less than $200m.
