Boston Micromachines Corporation, a leading provider of MEMS-based deformable mirror (DM) products for adaptive optics systems, recently announced a new high speed, high precision controller for its Mini-DM. This new controller provides increased resolution and speed and has been engineered in a package five times smaller than the previous version. The Mini-DM's low cost, small size and high functionality enable researchers to accomplish adaptive optics proof-of-concept experiments for laser beam shaping.

The new controller, which enhances Boston Micromachines' Mini-DM, has been improved to provide 14 bit resolution in position control at greater than an 8 kHz frame rate. The Mini-DM is also used to improve resolution in microscopes, telescopes, and ophthalmic instruments. It is ideal for laboratory-scale adaptive optics and proof-of-concept wavefront control in microscopy and vision science research where imaging instruments often suffer from resolution limitations.
The Mini-DM is currently being used in vision science by researchers studying glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. In microscopy, the Mini-DM's ability to actively correct for aberrations helps researchers extract vital information from biological specimens.
