LED bandage destroys skin cancer cells

A glowing bandage that can patch up wounds and destroy skin cancer cells by zapping them with light, has been unveiled by British scientists.

The strip of bendy plastic is embedded with light-emitting diodes that blast a high-powered beam of red light onto tumours. A special cream applied to the skin before the treatment undergoes a chemical reaction when it absorbs the light, which then attacks the cancer cells.

Early tests on the photodynamic therapy (PDT) device by Polymertronics researchers at their laboratory in Banbury, Oxfordshire, UK, have killed cancer cells in just 30 minutes.

Researchers believe that other medical conditions that may be treated with a wearable device that can activate photosensitive drugs include acne, psoriasis, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and Bowen's disease.
