SPIE is pleased to announce that some of our most popular courses are now available online! SPIE's online courses are asynchronous and on-demand, available where and when you need them.
What are the technical requirements?
The technical requirements for SPIE Courses Online are minimal:
- Windows or MacOS computer
- A broadband Internet connection (high speed required for streaming video, audio-only mode available for slower connections)
- Adobe Flash Player version 8+ to view the streaming content. You can download the newest version here.
NOTE: Course videos currently can not run on iPhone/iPad due to the lack of Flash support. - Moodle runs within your Internet browser, so no additional software is needed, and is compatible with all major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome).
- Display setting of 1024 x 768 or higher will allow best viewing of videos.
How do the online courses compare to other SPIE courses?
The content of the online courses is very similar to the content presented at events and in-company. The online content consists of streaming video and audio of the instructor's presentation synched with PowerPoint slides. Each module has clearly stated learning outcomes and includes a quiz to measure your mastery of the material presented.
How long do the courses take to complete?
The course duration will vary depending on the course and how many times you watch the videos for each module. Generally speaking, the courses are either half day (3.5 hours) or full day (6.5 hours) courses broken up into smaller modules of ten to thirty minutes each.
Can I receive CEUs for the courses?
SPIE's courses offered online are approved to provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs.) For those courses that offer CEUs, you must complete the quiz for each module with a score of at least 90% and complete the evaluation form at the end of the course to receive your CEUs. After successful completion, a certificate will be emailed to you stating the course title and the number of CEUs received.
What if there are additional course materials?
Occasionally an online course will include additional course materials and these will be sent via standard mail to the address you specified when purchasing the course. You do not have to wait for your materials to arrive before taking the course. At times there may also be 'Recommended' materials available for purchase and there will be a link provided to enable you to order these at additional cost.
Do I have to create a profile to purchase a course?
You can opt out of the SPIE.org profile when creating your login.
How long until the course is available to me?
You will receive an email from SPIE with a link to access your course within one hour from purchase. Please contact onlinecourseadmin@spie.org if you have not received this email after purchasing your course.
How do I access the course once it is purchased?
Your login credentials will be the same as those you use for SPIE.org. To login to your course, go to onlinecourses.spie.org and login using your SPIE.org login credentials. Your course(s) will be listed there as links. While most courses should be accessible immediately, it may take up to one hour for your course to be available. How long can I access the course?
You will have one year of access to the course from the purchase date. Even after you have completed all of the modules and printed your certificate, you can still access the content and refresh your knowledge for up to one year after the purchase date.
