Research-industry synergy strong at SPIE Photonics West 2012

SPIE Photonics West was back with more again this year: more technical papers, exhibiting companies, exhibit visitors, conference attendees, professional development courses, and even more networking. Well established as the premier international photonics conference and exhibition, the event drew just over 20,000 registered attendees to the Moscone Center in San Francisco 21-26 January.

Photonics innovators honored with Prism awards

Winners of the 2011 Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation were announced at a gala banquet last night (25 January) in San Francisco during SPIE Photonics West. Awards were presented by industry leaders in nine categories for photonic products that challenge conventional ideas, solve problems, and improve life through the generation and harnessing of light. The Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation are sponsored by Photonics Media and SPIE.

SPIE preserves digital library contents with the CLOCKSS Archive

The CLOCKSS Archive and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, have partnered to preserve the content of the SPIE Digital Library, the world's largest collection of optics and photonics literature, in the CLOCKSS dark archive.

New noninvasive test to assess breathing, feeding risks in newborns

A very challenging and vulnerable patient group -- premature and full-term newborn babies -- stands to benefit from a new monitoring method developed by biomedical optics scientists in Sweden. A case study from the work will be presented next week at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco.

SPIE to host entrepreneur competition at Photonics West

Twenty aspiring entrepreneurs will pitch their biophotonics and optoelectronics ideas and products to a team of expert judges in a photonics-based start-up business pitch competition Monday and Wednesday at the SPIE Photonics West conference in San Francisco.  Hosted by SPIE and sponsored by Jenoptik, the contest will bring together early-stage entrepreneurs with experienced industry leaders, product specialists, and venture capitalists serving as contest judges.
