Lihong Wang and Hsin-I Wu receive Goodman Book Writing Award from SPIE and OSA

Lihong V. Wang and Hsin-I Wu are recipients of the 2010 Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for their book Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging, SPIE and the Optical Society (OSA) have announced.

Laser pioneers and Nobel Laureates honored at LaserFest event

Laser pioneers, Nobel Laureates, and other laser luminaries were honored at a reception on 12 February in Washington, D.C. The celebration was part of LaserFest, the 2010 celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first demonstration of a working laser, and was co-hosted by the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution.

It's Engineers Week: Celebrate the profession with SPIE

The results of engineering are everywhere, from laser surgery to digital cameras to 3D movies and a plethora of other familiar applications. To celebrate those accomplishments, 15-21 February has been designated Engineers Week by the American National Society of Professional Engineers. SPIE, an international society whose initiatives include educational and outreach activities for optics and photonics engineers and researchers around the world, is an Endorsing Sponsor.

Photonics21 innovation prize is open to student applicants

Student innovators have until 19 February to apply for the 2010 Photonics21 Student Innovation Award. The winning project will receive a certificate and a cash prize of €5,000, to be presented at an awards ceremony on 12 April during the opening ceremony at SPIE Photonics Europe in Brussels.

Record-setting SPIE Photonics West includes tribute to laser

SPIE Photonics West completed its debut week at the Moscone Center in San Francisco Thursday with the final attendance count at 18,327, a record for the event.

Photonics West opens with strong first day in San Francisco

Photonics West opening-day attendance was up over last year for both technical registrations and exhibit visitors, with 25% more registrants altogether than in 2009. Conference chairs for the strong Biomedical Optics (BiOS) technical program that opened the week reported seeing high-energy sessions including several overflowing rooms and high-quality talks. The weekend's BiOS exhibition is seeing strong traffic and has a record number of booths.

New sensors, systems, platforms at SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing

SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing, the largest unclassifed international symposium on sensors, systems, and platforms, is expected to draw more than 6,000 attendees for its 55 technical conferences and 500-company exhibition. Dates are 5-9 April at the Orlando, Florida, World Center Marriott Resort and Convention Center.

IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging event to advance 3D, color imaging, and more

New conferences on imaging and printing in a Web 2.0 world, 3D image processing applications, and computer vision and image analysis of art have been added to Electronic Imaging 2010. The event is jointly sponsored by the Society for Imaging Science adn Technology (IS&T) and SPIE, and will run 17-21 January in the San Jose, Calif., Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.
