Presentation of the 2008 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship to Tobias Schmid was made 2 September at the SPIE Europe Optical Systems Design (EOD) symposium in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

Jannick Rolland, a professor and Schmid's thesis supervisor at CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida, accepted the award on Schmid's behalf. Schmid's research concerns nodal aberration theory and its application to the alignment of optical instruments.

Tina Kidger, Proprietor of Kidger Optics Associates, and EOD Symposium Chair David Williamson of West Malvern and NRCA Fellow, Nikon Research Corporation of America, made the award during a reception at the conference.

Rolland and Williamson are Fellows of SPIE.

The Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor Michael John Kidger, a well-respected educator, design software developer, and member of the optical science and engineering community.
