Chairs & Committee Members

Welcome Conference Chairs and Committee Members!

Thank you for volunteering to chair a conference, or serve on a Technical Committee with SPIE. Though there are many responsibilities associated with being a Conference Chair or Committee Member, SPIE is dedicated to making the process as easy as possible. An SPIE Technical Programs Coordinator and Proceedings Editor will work directly with you and can answer any questions you have throughout the process.

The main responsibilities for Conference Chairs include:

  • Writing a Call for Papers
  • Soliciting and reviewing abstract submissions
  • Identifying potential invited papers
  • Contacting (or helping SPIE identify), potential sponsor funds to help support travel and fees for speakers
  • Organizing the conference program
  • Conducting the conference at the meeting
  • Reviewing manuscripts and working with the Proceedings Editor to help ensure that all presentations result in a manuscript submission.

Your Technical Programs Coordinator will provide you with deadline dates for the Call for Papers and Conference Technical Program for your specific conference. Adhering to the due dates/deadlines so that we can promote the meeting and send author notifications is critical to the success of your conference!

The responsibilities for Technical Committee Members include:

  • Helping solicit presentations/papers for the conference
  • Participating in the review of abstracts and manuscripts
  • Assisting the Conference Chair(s) and SPIE to locate sponsor funds to help support travel and fees for needy and key speakers
  • Keeping in touch with the Conference Chair(s), and making suggestions for possible panel discussions, workshops, and keynote speakers
  • Acting as Session Chairs at the meeting.

Since information can vary by conference, specific information can be found by clicking on the "Information for Conference Chair & Committee Members" link within the specific conference. You will also receive specific conference information from the SPIE Technical Programs Coordinator for the meeting. Please don't hesitate to contact your Technical Programs Coordinator if you have any questions.

If you are interested in becoming a Conference Chair or serving on a Technical Committee:

SPIE continually seeks new ideas for conferences and actively looks for outstanding technical individuals to chair them. SPIE staff work closely with Symposium and Program Chairs to develop new conferences and to find qualified Conference Chairs. The Conference Chairs then invite/confirm their Technical Committee Members and are encouraged to have broad geographical representation on the committee, as well as representation from universities, industry, early career professionals, and the government, when possible. If you would like more information, please contact the Technical Programs Coordinator(s) for the specific conference listed below.
