A lifetime in optics: A video interview with Robert Edmund

As the CEO of Edmund Optics, Robert Edmund has a unique perspective on the industry. He talks about growing up in optics, how the company has changed, globalization, and his outlook for the industry.

27 February 2008, SPIE Newsroom. DOI: 10.1117/2.3200802.0004

Edmund Optics Inc. (EO) has been a leading supplier of optics and optical components to industry since 1942, designing and manufacturing a wide array of multi-element lenses, lens coatings, imaging systems, and optomechanical equipment.

Originally a supplier of optics and other science items for hobbyist and educational use, EO refocused on industrial optics during the mid-1980s when market analysis showed that demand for its educational items had peaked. Since that time the company has become well known as a catalog based distributor of industrial optics and related products, as well as a source for much more,  including application integration, custom lens and coating design, and OEM services.

Robert Edmund, CEO, is the son of the company founder, Norman Edmund. He has overseen the growth and re-positioning of the company to its current emphasis. He was interviewed at SPIE Photonics West 2008 for SPIE Newsroom, and talked about his history with the company and his view of the outlook for the photonics industry.
