    Highlights from Medical Imaging 2008

Thank you for helping make SPIE Medical Imaging 2008 another great success. SPIE appreciates your participation and involvement.

The week brought some sadness to many as Sam Dwyer, a co-founder of the meeting passed away a few weeks ago. At the Symposium Wide Plenary Session a tribute to Sam, written by Roger Schneider and read by Steve Horii. Roger states, “Sam was one of the first to envision the impact of digital technology on the storage, retrieval, communication, and display of medical images and one of the most active early explorers of the possibilities.” This was a sentiment echoed throughout the week.

There were also highlights for this group as they saw four of their colleagues recognized as newly appointed Fellows, student paper awards given and poster awards presented.

There were many stories this week about people who began coming to SPIE Medical Imaging as students and are now on program committees or are conference chairs. Great news.

The attendance will be approximately the same as last year at about 1250 people.

Courses were extremely strong with one course attracting 44 people.

The exhibit continues to be a niche exhibit with about 10 companies showcasing their products but those companies do find value in this environment.

We look forward to seeing you in Orlando in 2009!
