High-power LEDs and solid-state lighting: a video interview with Mike Krames

Improvements in LED brightness and efficiency have brought many applications of solid-state lighting out of the lab and into the real world. What will it take to get them into homes and offices?

Mike Krames is Director, Advanced Laboratories, at Philips Lumileds Lighting Company (San Jose, California). His group performs strategic research for Philips Lumileds and focuses upon advanced III-nitride and III-phosphide epitaxy and chip technology, luminescent materials for down-conversion, and novel system concepts for solid-state lighting applications. He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, in 1989, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He has more than 60 publications and more than 30 issued U.S. patents.

In this interview, he discusses research and development at Philips Lumileds, including thin-film flip-chip technology and new methods of controlling color quality. He also assesses the prospects for wider adoption of LED technology.

Krames was a keynote speaker at SPIE Photonics West, held in San Jose, CA in January 2008. He was interviewed for SPIE Newsroom at the symposium.
