The SPIE Membership Committee is chartered by the SPIE Board of Directors to solicit, collect, evaluate and recommend an annual class of SPIE Members for promotion to Senior Member. After an extensive evaluation, the Committee presents its recommendation in the form of a written report to the Board of Directors. The Board uses the report to form the basis of a final decision as to the individuals that will be promoted in that year. The deadline for applications is the 2nd Monday in September of the current year.
Eligibility
According to the Standard Operating Procedures for Senior Members of SPIE, the Board of Directors may confer the grade of Senior Member on a Member who is a regular, early career, life, or retired Member of the Society at the time they are nominated, and has become distinguished through outstanding contributions in the relevant technologies.
Criteria
Candidates meeting the above eligibility requirements who are nominated for promotion to the grade of SPIE Senior Member will be evaluated by the Society's Membership Committee according to the following criteria:

If another Member makes the nomination, then two colleagues must second the nomination by providing a letter of recommendation (at least one must be an SPIE Member).
The Membership Committee will notify all nominators, in writing, of their acceptance or other action being taken in regard to the individual nominee being considered.
Submit all materials to SPIE by the second Monday in September of the given year:
8 September 2008
14 September 2009
In the event that a nominee is not chosen as a Senior Member of the Society the first time he or she is nominated, the next two consecutive committees automatically consider him or her for Senior Member. Nominators are encouraged to update or add to the nomination materials, if appropriate, prior to the next year's deadline.
