Publication charges of $90 per published page apply to all papers. These are financial contributions from authors' institutions to help support publication of research results and cover less than half the cost of editorial, typographic, printing, and mailing expenses incurred in the publication of a technical paper. Such payments, while voluntary, should be regarded as an essential and proper part of research budgets. Read an editorial on the importance of publication charges (PDF) by Don O'Shea.
Editorial acceptance is not contingent on publication charge support; however, unsupported papers require full subsidization by SPIE and publication may be delayed. The Society expresses its appreciation for publication charge support by offering a 10% discount on reprints. Also, effective as of the September/October 2009 issue of JBO, papers for which publication charges are paid in full will become open access one year after the date of online publication.
To pay publication charges, authors must complete a Publication Charge Certification Form.
Open Access Options:
JBO now offers authors three open access options.
1. Delayed Open Access: For authors who pay the voluntary page charges of $90 per published page in full, papers will become open access 12 months after the date of publication.
2. Immediate Open Access: Authors have the option to pay an open access fee of $1500 to provide free online access to the full text of their paper immediately upon publication. Payment of the open access fee covers regular page charges but does not cover other publication charges, such as charges for reprints or color printing. To select immediate open access, please return the Immediate Open Access Publication Form with payment to SPIE either before or at the time you return your author proof corrections. Open access to the article can be ensured only if payment in full is received by SPIE before the author’s proof corrections are completed. If an author chooses immediate open access, but SPIE does not receive full payment before completion of the author corrections, the article will be published conventionally, that is, without immediate open access. An author’s choice to select immediate open access has no impact on any aspect of the peer-review process or on the Editor’s ultimate decision regarding publication.
3. JBO Letters: All papers published in JBO Letters are automatically open access at the time of publication. Voluntary page charges still apply.
