Biography
Prof. Vijaya works in the research area of Photonics, specializing in the topics of Nonlinear Optics, Fiber Optics and Photonic band gap (PBG) materials. She completed her Ph.D degree in 1991 from IIT Madras with a dissertation on Degenerate Four Wave Mixing in Conjugated Organic materials. After a stint of post-doctoral and teaching assignments, she joined the Physics Department of IIT Bombay as a faculty member in 1997. Her expertise is in the experimental research areas of Nonlinear Fiber optics and Photonic crystals. She has supervised doctoral theses in these areas, with emphasis on experiments and computational modeling. As part of her academic duties, she has taught a variety of courses to students of the undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral degree programs.

This talk will give an introduction to the physics and technology of Lasers and discuss the study of nonlinear sciences with the help of lasers. (relevant for senior undergraduate and graduate students)
Fiber Optics and its Present Relevance in Communication
This talk will present a basic introduction to the subject of fiber optics. This will be followed by an in-depth analysis of the relevance of Fiber-optic communication in the present research scenario and the skills required to master the subject. (relevant for senior undergraduate and graduate students)

This talk will focus on the emerging area of Nanophotonics and present the research potential of the subject. (relevant for senior graduate students)
