Photonic materials and devices, all-optical switching, optical power limiting, fullerene application, ultra-high efficiency solar cells.
Biography
Alan Kost has 20 years experience in photonic materials and devices. After graduation from the University of Texas at Austin with a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Dr. Kost spent 5 years as a Research Scientist at the University of Southern California where he investigated the nonlinear optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures for all-optical switching. Leaving central Los Angeles for the hills above Malibu, Dr. Kost spent 9 years as a Senior Staff Physicist at the Hughes Research Laboratories.
At Hughes he demonstrated the first application for fullerenes – optical power limiting. Now at the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, Dr. Kost applies nanotechnology to the development of ultra-high efficiency solar cells.
