2023 SPIE scholarship recipients

In 2023, SPIE awarded $293,000 in scholarships to 72 outstanding SPIE Student Members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated, selected, and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee.

SPIE has cumulatively distributed more than $7 million in individual scholarships since the program began. This ambitious effort reflects the Society's commitment to education and to the next generation of optical scientists and engineers around the world. Individual awards range from $3,000 to $11,000.

Brian Primeau, the 2023 SPIE Scholarship Committee chair, noted, “Congratulations to the SPIE 2023 scholarship winners!  These students have all demonstrated their potential to make long-term contributions to the optics and photonics community, and the Scholarship Committee was thoroughly impressed with the students' accomplishments. The committee members and I look forward to seeing what this class of students brings to the world as they begin or continue their careers in optics and photonics.”

Primeau also expressed his gratitude: “Thank you to all the applicants for taking the time to apply, and thank you to all the recommenders who took time to write insightful letters. Finally, thanks to the committee volunteers and SPIE staff for their time in reviewing all the applications!”
