Chair - Ian Ashdown, Senior Research Scientist for Philips Lighting, BU Solid State Lighting (Burnaby, Canada), Senior Software Engineer for Lighting Analysts Inc., and President of byHeart Consultants Ltd. (West Vancouver, Canada)

Talk: Introduction - Product Specifications

Ian Ashdown is a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America who has written extensively over the past 30 years on lighting research and development. He holds over 40 patents and patent applications related to solid state lighting. His professional and personal interests have led to explorations ranging from photometric theory and eigenanalysis to genetic algorithms and holographic techniques.

Presenter - Kevin Dowling, Vice President of Innovation, Philips Solid State Lighting Solutions (Boston, MA)

Talk: LED Lighting Systems and Applications - A Whole New Light

Kevin Dowling has overseen multiple programs and initiatives designed to stay at the forefront of LED lighting, and is an inventor or co-inventor on several patents. Dowling received a BS in Mathematics, and an MS and PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University.

Presenter - Mark McClear, Director of Business Development, Cree, Inc. (Dulles, VA)

Talk: Emerging Applications in Solid State Lighting

The rapid improvement in luminous flux output, efficacy, and cost reduction of LED technology has enabled a number of new applications in Solid State Lighting. With these opportunities also come some challenges, and the enabling infrastructure in terms of industry standards are just forming. This presentation will highlight some successful SSL implementations in the last 12 months, highlight some areas for improvement, and look into what we can expect regarding SSL adoption over the next year.

Mark McClear is responsible for marketing and business development in Cree's solid-state lighting business. He has also worked at Dow Chemical and Praxair, working in R&D, business development, engineering, marketing, and management. McClear has a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State and an MBA from Babson College.
