David Boas plenary presentation: From Chance to Neurophotonics

Presented at SPIE Photonics West 2016

29 February 2016

In this plenary session, David Boas, winner of the 2016 Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award, talks about Professor Britton Chance, who mentored and guided Boas in graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. He credits Chance with pushing him to find in vivo applications of optical imaging devices, and was also instrumental in introducing Boas to his now career-centric field of fNIRS.

Boas designs and uses fNIRS devices to measure brain activation in complement with BOLD fMRI to quantify metabolic indicators of neural activity.

Boas is Director of the Optics Division of the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor in radiology at Harvard Medical School. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Neurophotonics, published by SPIE
