Since 1994, SPIE has awarded CEUs to more than 15,000 short course participants. The CEU is a nationally recognized unit of measure used to quantify continuing education and training activities.
Definition of CEU
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) were created as a way to document noncredit work in specifically developed activities for adult learners in a variety of disciplines. One CEU is defined as "10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction". One full-day SPIE course equals .65 CEU (deducting scheduled break and lunch times). A half-day SPIE course equals .35 CEU (deducting one half-hour break).
Standards
SPIE has been approved as an authorized provider of CEUs by IACET, The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (Provider #1002092). In obtaining this approval, SPIE has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standards which are widely recognized as standards of good practice. The mission of IACET is to promote and advance quality continuing education and training. SPIE, like other authorized providers, is committed to developing educational experiences which have a clear purpose, result from careful planning, are taught by qualified instructors and which are routinely evaluated. See IACET's Criteria and Guidelines.
Requirements for CEU Award
Students must be present for the entire short course, must complete the evaluation form provided, and must return the completed form to SPIE requesting CEUs within 30 days of the course presentation.
Certificates
SPIE prepares and sends personalized CEU certificates with course name, date, title, and CEUs earned to participants who complete all course requirements and request the CEU certificate.
Permanent Records
SPIE maintains a record of all CEUs earned for each participant for seven years. These records will be available upon request to the participant only. To obtain a copy of your CEUs earned, e-mail us.
