Claire Max, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at University of California, Santa Cruz, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

SPIE Fellow John C. Mather, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics, will donate $300,000 of his $700,000 share of the prize to the Hertz Foundation, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Kristina M. Johnson, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at The Johns Hopkins University, has been selected to receive the John Fritz Medal .
