SPIE Translational Biophotonics was held beneath sunny skies in Houston on Monday and Tuesday 19-20 May. Symposium Chair Tomasz Tkaczyk, Rice Univ., welcomed a group of over 100 participants to the inaugural event, held in the Rice BioScience Research Collaborative. Featured topics by the 19 invited speakers included a special focus on clinical applications, imaging, and diagnostics, with a recurrent theme of providing new tools that reduce invasive methods and improve outcomes for patients, both in developed and emerging economies. Following a poster preview session featuring select poster presenters, the poster session and reception included 40 presentations by local and international researchers. Speakers and a panel discussion also focused on the mechanics of successful translation to clinical applications, and meeting participants were able to tour a select group of labs housed within the facility.
