    How do I sign up?
Reply to the survey link in the email you received from SPIE if you are interested in volunteering. There are a limited number of appointments available for each session. If you are a match, a recruiter may email or phone to ask you a series of screening questions. Then if you are selected, you will receive a confirmation email with details on testing location and your appointment time.

    What is a usability study?
A usability study is a type of market research where the study participant uses a computer to explore a website and gives verbal (and sometimes written) feedback. The purpose of doing this is to understand how SPIE can make the website easier to use. We are not evaluating you in any way; we are only evaluating the website.

You will be asked to think out loud and describe what you're looking at, what is confusing or anything that surprises you. A moderator will sit next to you and will take notes.

How do I know if I'm eligible to participate in a usability study?
Filling out the survey profile you received in your email will allow our recruiters to potentially match you to a study based on your demographic information. You may then be contacted by phone or email by our recruiter to ask you further screening questions. If you match the criteria, you will be given an appointment time based on your indicated preference.

Where will the study take place?

The study will coincide with SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015 in San Diego, California. You are responsible for transportation to and from the usability study. The study is located within walking distance of the convention center. If selected, you will be sent a confirmation via email with time and location of the study.

When will the study take place?
The study takes place at various times on Sunday 9 August and Monday 10 August 2015. If selected, you will be emailed the details of your appointment time and location. We will try our best to match you up to your indicated preference time.

Will I be paid for participating?
Yes! You will be paid in cash at the conclusion of the study. If you are unable to accept the cash honorarium, SPIE can make a donation to an organization of your choice instead. The honorarium is $125.

How long does the session last?
Sessions are 90 minutes. We require that you are able to attend for the full 90-minute time slot indicated in the profile questions in the recruitment survey.

So, all I have to do is show up at the testing location, give my opinion and I'll be paid?
Yes. After you are screened and invited, you will need to confirm your attendance. There is no preparation required on your part, unless otherwise stated in your confirmation letter.

Can I invite my friends to participate in the research?
We ask that you do not forward the recruitment announcement to your co-workers or friends who are attending SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015. Please also refrain from bringing friends with you to your appointment as we will not be able to accommodate them without pre-screening.

    What else should I know?
The session will be recorded. The data used from your session is used solely for evaluating the website and used for internal purposes only. By agreeing to participate in the study, you are giving your consent for us to record the session.
