Call for papers: Wavefront engineering has greatly expanded the capability of optical microscopy and measurements in biological systems. Recent breakthroughs in measuring and controlling optical wavefront have led to many important applications, including deep tissue microscopy with improved imaging quality and depth, optical tweezers with sophisticated shape and momentum distribution, and three-dimensionally patterned optogenetic excitation. A new special section in the Journal of Biomedical Optics will highlight these achievements. We solicit papers that report on major developments and applications in the field of wavefront control technologies for biomedical applications.

We encourage submission of original research works and review papers, especially on the following topics:

  • adaptive optics for microscopy, ophthalmology, and optical coherence tomography
  • guide-star probes for wavefront measurement and light guiding in biological tissues
  • imaging neural connectivity and function in brain tissue
  • focusing light through scattering tissues (optimization, transmission matrix)
  • channel de-mixing for endoscopy
  • wavefront shaping for photoacoustic and acousto-optical imaging
  • applications of time-reversal in biological imaging, optical phase conjugation
  • shaped beams for light sheet and structured illumination microscopy
  • coherent optical adaptive techniques
  • computed optical imaging techniques
  • wavefront-shaping devices (deformable mirrors, spatial light modulators).

This call for papers is open to everyone. Participants in the 2016 conference on Adaptive Optics and Wavefront Control for Biological Systems II at Photonics West BIOS are encouraged to submit revised and expanded papers for consideration. All submissions will be peer reviewed.

Submissions due 15 June 2016.

Call for Papers: The SPIE BiOS Translational Research Symposium at Photonics West (http://spie.org/PW16B/special-events/Technical-Event) highlights the unique challenges associated with translating biophotonics technologies from benchtop to bedside. This special series is intended to complement the Translational Research Symposium by providing archival peer-reviewed manuscripts that describe technologies and best practices that will further accelerate the translation of biophotonics research into clinical practice.

Papers should demonstrate how optics and photonics technologies can be used to solve healthcare challenges, including improving clinical outcome and enhancing cost-effectiveness. A range of topics will be explored, spanning from early phase feasibility studies to emerging strategies for disease detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Key concepts that will be addressed include:

  • Identifying clinical problems and unmet clinical needs
  • Matching biophotonics solutions to clinical problems
  • Developing clinical outcome measure(s) to assess efficacy
  • Describing operational barriers to clinical translation
  • Disseminating and adopting biophotonics technologies.

Submissions due 30 May 2016.

Call for Papers: Photoacoustic imaging is one of the fastest-growing areas of research in biomedical optics. Photoacoustic imaging methods are capable of deep tissue penetration, high ultrasonic resolution, and speckle-free optical contrast. Important emerging applications include in-vivo functional and molecular imaging of cancer, neurophysiology, and vascular disease in both human subjects and preclinical animal models. Major challenges in this field include the development of quantitative methods for functional and molecular imaging and their clinical translation. This special section will cover all topics related to photoacoustic imaging and sensing, including, but not limited to the following:

  • photoacoustic (optoacoustic) microscopy
  • photoacoustic (optoacoustic) imaging and computed tomography
  • photoacoustic (optoacoustic) sensing and spectroscopy
  • Endoscopic and interventional devices
  • Low-cost laser diode-based photoacoustic imaging devices
  • microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography
  • temperature imaging based on the photoacoustic effect
  • dual-modality optical-ultrasound imaging
  • contrast agents and genetic reporters
  • image reconstruction and signal processing algorithms
  • applications in biology and medicine.

This call for papers is open to everyone, and participants in the 2016 conference on Photons Plus Ultrasound: Imaging and Sensing at Photonics West BIOS are invited to submit revised and expanded papers for consideration. Submissions should follow the guidelines of the Journal of Biomedical Optics, which can be found at http://spie.org/JBOauthorinfo. Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://jbo.msubmit.net.

Submissions due 1 September 2016.
