Profile Summary

Dr Clarence Yapp completed his Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering at Monash University Malaysia. He went on to do an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Oxford University where he was awarded the prize for Best Overall Student. This was followed by him completing a DPhil thesis in 2 years. Clarence is currently employed by the Structural Genomics Consortium as a Post-doctoral Research Scientist where he develops cell-based assays for demethylases and bromodomains. He is also the Head of Microscopy at the Botnar Research Centre. His research interests include non-linear optical and high-content imaging, as well as using a two-photon laser to temporarily permeabilize cells (called optoporation) for the purpose of delivering ‘cargo’ into cells without the need for fixatives.
In his free time, Clarence is also an award-winning film director and composer for both scientific and sports videos. Between 2009 and 2010, he was sworn in as President of Wolfson College Boat Club (Oxford).
