S.H. Andy YunSeok-Hyun (Andy) Yun of Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital tells how a major limit to optical imaging techniques in living tissue -- penetration depth -- is being addressed in his presentation, "BioLaser."

The work described in this talk shows how a single human cell injected with GFP can be used as a gain medium for lasing action.

Yun is an Assistant Professor in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His thesis research in fiber optics led to a $68M-funded startup company, Novera Optics, Inc., in San Jose, CA. In 2003, moving his career from industry to academia and from optical telecommunications to biomedical optics, he joined the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He started his own lab in 2005.
