Presented at SPIE Photonics West 2012
09 February 2012

Daniel PalankerIn "Photovoltaic Retinal Prosthesis for Restoring Sight to the Blind," Daniel Palanker of Stanford University presents a comparison of several retinal implant systems and describes his group's development of a retinal prosthesis that uses photovoltaic stimulation to restore sight to the blind.

Palanker is an associate professor in  the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine, and Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory at Stanford University. Palanker's group studies interactions of electric field with biological cells and tissues in a broad range of frequencies -- from quasi-static to optical, and develops their medical (primarily ophthalmic) applications.
