J. Michael Fitzpatrick plenary talk: Twenty-five years of error

J. Michael Fitzpatrick, Vanderbilt University (USA) Target registration error, referred to as TRE, is a term and quantity familiar to those in the image registration and surgical guidance communities -- but that wasn't always the case, according to Michael Fitzpatrick of Vanderbilt University in this keynote address.

Intertwining the stories of the development of the surgical system with the research into TRE, he illustrates the pitfalls and progress in both industrial and academic settings. The historical review also demonstrates that setbacks and poor reviews by editors and funding agencies can ultimately be overcome through perseverance, dedication and a bit of luck.

This address is entertaining, but also sends an encouraging message to those researchers, particularly students, who are having troubles of their own. That message is that setbacks and criticism today do not mean that success won't come tomorrow.

J. Michael Fitzpatrick is professor emeritus of computer science, electrical engineering, radiology, and neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University, where he has served since 1982. He is a Fellow of the SPIE and of the IEEE, a co-editor of Volume Two of the Handbook of Medical Imaging, and was co-chair of the Image Processing Conference for four years. His research is focused primarily on predicting, reducing, and measuring error in medical image registration and surgical guidance.
