David Messinger: Remote-sensing systems for real-world applications

Remotely sensed data can be of critical help to first responders when natural disasters strike, but the amount of data available presents new challenges.

David Messinger is an Associate Research Professor in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he is the Director of the Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing (DIRS) Laboratory.

The DIRS lab focuses on the development of hardware and software tools to facilitate the extraction of information from remotely sensed data of the earth and the education of students who will continue this work for government agencies and private industry. The lab includes nine faculty and approximately 40 graduate and undergraduate students. In addition, several high school interns participate in research projects and learn more about imaging science.

Messinger received a Bachelors degree in Physics from Clarkson University and a Ph.D. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has worked as an Analyst for XonTech Inc. and on the National Missile Defense Program for Northrop Grumman. His personal research focuses on projects related to remotely sensed spectral image exploitation using physics-based approaches and advanced mathematical techniques with particular emphasis on the areas of large-area search and target detection.

He is a member of SPIE and serves on the program committee for the annual Algorithms and Technologies for Multispectral, Hyperspectral, and Ultraspectral Imagery conference at SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing. He also chaired a Special Joint Session on Remote Sensing and Natural Disasters at the 2012 SPIE International Symposium on Remote Sensing in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has contributed more than 50 papers to SPIE Proceedings.
