Graeme Malcolm: Mix of basic science and applications drive M Squared Lasers' growth

Making a difference in the world through science and technology.

30 March 2017, SPIE Newsroom. DOI: 10.1117/2.3201703.19

Scientist and entrepreneur Graeme Malcolm has led a productive career in photonics and laser technology, responsible for the growth of three successful photonics companies while developing many new commercial lasers and photonics applications.

Graeme is currently focused on finding solutions to some of society's key problems, such as remote sensing for security and counter-terrorism, photonics to diagnose and treat diseases such as Alzheimers and dementia, systems to monitor climate change and food production, as well as finding new ways to enhance cell science through microscopy.

Passionate about using science and technology to make a real difference to the world, Graeme devotes himself to supporting the UK's scientific base. He was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to science and innovation and the Katharine Burr Blodgett Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics (IOP) for his outstanding contributions to the application of physics in a commercial context.

Graeme Malcolm received a BSc in laser physics and optoelectronics at Strathclyde University, followed by a PhD incorporating research into compact solid-state laser sources.

In 1992, he co-founded Microlase Optical Systems Ltd., which was acquired by Coherent Inc. in 1999, where he led the development of a new manufacturing facility. In October 2005 he co-founded M Squared Lasers Ltd., which specializes in novel laser solutions for a wide range of sectors, including defense and security, oil and gas, and food and drink.

Malcolm has authored several papers and is a frequent participant in SPIE events as a speaker and panel member. He was a presenter at the 2016 PRISM Awards at Photonics West. M Squared Lasers is also a regular exhibitor at the Photonics West BiOS exhibition.
