Linda Smith: The acquisition market for the photonics industry

Increasing acquisitions of smaller companies reflects growing value in the industry.

Linda Smith is president of Ceres Technical Advisers, Inc. (Waltham, MA). She founded Ceres in 2005 to serve photonics technology business owners that were largely unserved by existing investment banks and business brokerages.She has more than 20 years experience in merger and acquisition advisory, marketing, product management, sales, engineering and business valuation. Her experience includes successfully identifying market opportunities and developing, managing and financing product-line growth for both public and private companies preparing for acquisition and financing.

Previously, Smith held senior and executive product management, marketing, and sales positions at Thermo Electron/Spectra Physics, LINOS Photonics/QIOPTIQ and Melles Griot. She also held executive marketing positions at early- and late-stage venture-capital-funded companies commercializing silicon-based integrated optics and MEMS-based photonics technologies.

She is an elected Senior Member of SPIE, and serves on the Society's Engineering, Science & Technology Policy Committee. She is a member of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Winning WomenTM class of 2008. She received her M.B.A. from Babson College and a B.S. degree from the University of Rochester in Optics and Mathematics.
