Jana Huisman: Photonics outreach is key to continued technology growth
Jana Huisman, a physics and mathematics undergraduate at the University of Bonn, was appointed Young Ambassador for Photonics Education by European Commissioner Neelie Kroes at the Photonics21 annual meeting, in April 2013. The award is supported jointly by the European Commission and Photonics21 and is targeted at promoting training in photonics technologies and contributing to a highly qualified workforce in Europe.
At the award ceremony, Kroes asked Huisman to join, as an observer, her group of Young Advisors on the Digital Agenda. That group is tasked with providing insight into digital communication technologies and applications.
Huisman' s bachelor thesis is on state-dependent atom transport in polarization-synthesized optical lattices. She intends to continue her current studies to Masters and PhD level. In her role as ambassador Jana will visit three different research institutes in 2013 with the aim of stimulating interest in the study of photonics.
She was interviewed at SPIE Optics + Photonics in August 2013.
Photonics21 is the European Technology Platform for photonics. It represents photonics research and innovation priorities at the European level and aims to implement a common photonics strategy for Europe.
