Video interview with Peter Hartmann

Peter Hartmann of Schott shares his insight into lens design and development.

14 September 2010, SPIE Newsroom. DOI: 10.1117/2.3201009.03

Peter Hartmann is Director of Market and Customer Relations for Advanced Optics at SCHOTT AG (Mainz, Germany).

His technical interests include optical glass, specification, quality assurance and applications of zero-expansion glass in optical systems, in ground-based and spaceborne astronomical telescopes and general research. He is also involved with optical metrology: interferometry, refractive index and striae measurement; fracture toughness, strength, and geometrical metrology. He has been involved in several groups determining optical standards for the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

SCHOTT is a major supplier of optical materials, some of which are used in high-energy applications such as debris shields in the National Ignition Facility fusion project at Lawrence Livermore National Lab.

Hartmann served as the general chair of the SPIE Photonics Europe 2010, and is a member of several program committees for SPIE conferences. He is a newly elected member of the SPIE Board of Directors.
