SPIE election

The 2018 SPIE election will open 9 July and close on 8 August.

SPIE members eligible to vote will select four new directors, a vice president, and a secretary/treasurer. Directors will serve three-year terms and officers will serve for one year, beginning 1 January 2019.

The candidates for vice president are SPIE Fellows David Andrews, professor of chemical physics at University of East Anglia (UEA) (UK) and Din Ping Tsai, Director and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Research Center for Applied Sciences, Academia Sinica (Taiwan). Both have served on the SPIE Board of Directors and several SPIE committees.

David L. Andrews University of East Anglia (UK)Andrews leads research on nanophotonics and quantum electrodynamics at UEA. The current focus of his research group is on quantum aspects of optical frequency up-conversion, optical vortices and chirality, optical manipulation, and nonlinear optical mechanisms in fluorescence. Andrews has more than 350 research papers and 20 books to his name, including the widely adopted textbook Lasers in Chemistry.

Din Ping Tsai Academia Sinica (Taiwan)Tsai received his PhD in physics from University of Cincinnati (USA) in 1990. He is author and coauthor of 292 SCI journal papers, 65 book chapters and conference papers, and 39 technical reports and articles. He served as vice chair (1996-1997) and chair (2004-2005) of the SPIE Taiwan chapter. Tsai is also the 2018 winner of the Mozi Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of optics.

The person elected vice president for 2019 will join the SPIE presidential chain, becoming SPIE president-elect in 2020 and president of the Society in 2021.

Jason Mulliner, CFO at Alluxa (USA)Jason Mulliner, CFO at Alluxa (USA), is the candidate for secretary/treasurer. Mulliner has served as a judge for the SPIE Startup Challenge, and serves on the SPIE committees for Compensation; Engineering, Science, and Technology Policy; Financial Advisory; and Strategic Planning.

Other officers, previously elected, are SPIE President-Elect Jim Oschmann of Ball Aerospace and Technologies (USA), who will become SPIE president in January 2019, and SPIE Vice President John Greivenkamp of the University of Arizona (USA) who becomes president-elect next year.

SPIE President Maryellen Giger of the University of Chicago (USA) will become immediate past president. She will announce the election results at the SPIE Annual General Meeting in San Diego,
CA (USA) 21 August.
