SPIE Member Arnaud Darmont died last week after a tragic accident in the White Sand National Monument in New Mexico. He was 39 years old.
Darmont served as an SPIE course instructor and session chair for IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging. He authored the SPIE Press Book, High Dynamic Range Imaging: Sensors and Architectures, and SPIE conference proceedings on image sensors and cameras.
Darmont's areas of expertise included high dynamic range image sensors, Image sensor and line scan sensors consulting, EMVA1288 measurement standard, EMVA1288 test equipment, image sensor control algorithms, image enhancement algorithms.
In 2008, Darmont founded Aphesa, which offers image sensor consulting, high dynamic range imaging, as well as image sensor and camera characterization, design, and benchmarking. Aphesa is one of the technical contributors to the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA1288) standard for characterization of machine vision sensors and cameras, and characterization data reporting.
Darmont held a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Liège (Belgium) and advanced vision professional certification from the Automated Imaging Association (AIA). Prior to founding Aphesa, he worked for more than 7 years in the field of CMOS image sensors and high dynamic range imaging. He authored several publications and held patents in the field of high dynamic range imaging, automotive on-board imaging and image processing applications, and image sensor test and characterization.
Darmont was also an avid hiker. In a short notice on Facebook, his brother wrote, "He died while he was walking in the country where he would have liked to live."
