Göran Pilbratt obtained a Ph.D. in radio astronomy from Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden, in 1986, and joined
ESA as Research Fellow. He obtained a Staff Scientist position in 1988, initially worked on studies of space VLBI missions, was appointed Study Scientist for Herschel (then FIRST) in 1991, and has been the Herschel Project Scientist since 1995.
