    Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Q: How do I sign up?
    A:
You may volunteer by answering the questions in the survey link immediately. There are a limited number of spots open for each session and the sessions are by invitation only. You will receive an email invitation acknowledgment if you are a potential candidate. If you are a match, a recruiter may email or phone to ask you a series of screening questions. Then if you are selected, you will receive a confirmation email with details on testing location and your appointment time.

Alternatively, if all focus group spots are taken or you do not match the criteria, you would receive a regrets email.

Q: What is a focus group?
    A:
A focus group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people are asked about their attitude towards a product, service, concept, advertisement, or idea. Questions are asked in an interactive group setting where participants are free to talk with other group members.

Q: How do I know if I'm eligible to participate in a focus group?
    A:
If your email had a survey link, completing the survey will help recruiters determine your eligibility. Otherwise, simply respond to the email as instructed. You may then be contacted by phone or email by our recruiter or SPIE staff to ask you further screening questions. In any case, if you match the criteria you will be given a confirmation email.

Q: Where will the focus groups take place?
A: The study will coincide with SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015 in San Diego, California, USA.  You are responsible for transportation to and from the focus group. The focus group is located within walking distance of the Convention Center. If selected, you will be sent a confirmation via email with time and location of the event.

Q: When will the focus groups take place?
    A:
The study takes place different times during the event. Your email invitation has the time specified for your group. If selected, you will be emailed more details of your group time and location.

Q: Will I be paid for participating?
A: Yes! You will be paid in cash at the conclusion of the study. If you are unable to accept the cash honorarium, SPIE can make a donation to an organization of your choice instead. The amount is $125.

Q: How long does the session last?
A: Usually, 90 minutes in length. We require that you are able to attend at minimum for at least the 90-minute time slot indicated in the profile questions in the recruitment email. We invite you to arrive a few minutes early to get a beverage and take your seat.

Q: So, all I have to do is show up at the location, participate, and I'll be paid?
    A:
Yes. After you are screened and invited, there is no preparation required on your part.

Q: Can I invite my friends to participate in the research?
    A:
No. For this particular study, we are restricting the recruitment pool.

Q: What else should I know?
    A:
We will be videotaping the session. The data used from your session is used solely for evaluating the study and used for internal purposes only. By agreeing to participate in the study, you are giving your consent for us to videotape the session.

Q: I have additional questions. Whom do I contact?
    A:
If you have further questions about the usability research studies, please email Diane Hodgkins, Marketing Department Manager, dianeh@spie.org.
