| The Berliner Glas Group is equipped for the future - New structure now also implemented at the SwissOptic AG As Berliner Glas has already been operating on the market for two years with a clear Business Unit structure, the photonics subsidiary SwissOptic has now also been restructured.
The company's Photonics Business Units cover a total of five strategic markets. At the site in Berlin, Berliner Glas focuses on Semi-conductors (chucks/glass and ceramic components), Medical Applications and Industrial Solutions. At the SwissOptic site, operations have been organized into the Business Units Semicon (inspection), Geosystems & Metrology as well as Defense. Furthermore, a Medical Applications Business Unit is also present at SwissOptic in Heerbrugg, which is run from Berlin.
At the Berliner Glas site in Berlin the success of the restructuring of the Business Units is clearly evident after two years and is not just expressed in an increase in turnover, but also in the technological challenge of new projects. Dr. Andreas Nitze, CEO of the Berliner Glas Group: “Our altered organizational structure has been well received in our target markets and we are pleased that in our Business Units we are not just working on demanding, large development and production projects, but often also serve the market leaders of the respective sectors and thereby ensure that with our optical system solutions we are working to form the issues of the future.”
New focus areas have also been set at SwissOptic. Nitze continues: "Alongside the pure focus on the market, in the future we will also be placing even greater emphasis on metrology and technological development by organizing it in a site-spanning manner. This is because in many cases it is purely the development of new, innovative opportunities which makes our customers successful.”
In the course of the restructuring process, Swissoptic AG has received a new management team, with the graduate physicist and experienced manager Dr. Hans Ebinger as the new General Manager. He already took over the reins in April and will lead SwissOptic into a future where they will focus even more strongly on the needs of the market.
He has been supported in this new role since March 2011 by Peter Grollmann, Head of the Semicon (Inspection) Business Unit. Further support will also come from Pavel Dokulil, who will run the Defense Business Unit from June 1st 2011, while from August 1st the position of Head of the Geosystems & Metrology Business Unit will be filled. Nicolas Hetzel has also already taken on his office, he has been responsible since April for the Medical Applications market segment, which will be run in Berlin by Sven Knuth.
About Berliner Glas: The Berliner Glas Group, with around 1000 employees, is one of the leading European providers of optical key components, assemblies and systems as well as high-quality refined technical glass. With an understanding of optical systems and optical production technology, Berliner Glas develops, produces and integrates optics, mechanics and electronics into innovative system solutions for its customers. These solutions are used worldwide in the semiconductor industry, medical technology, metrology, laser and space technology, analytics, defense and the display industry.
Business Unit Geosystems & Metrology: The Berliner Glas Group supports innovative and laser-based metrology, with which both, angles and dimensions, as well as 3-D coordinates can be determined exactly. We provide objectives for aerial cameras, opto-mechanical assemblies for laser trackers, transceivers for 3-D measuring systems and interior triple reflectors.
Business Unit Defense: Optical components and system solutions for safety and defense applications: Heatable windows, optically and mechanically centered objectives as well as lightweight adjustable deflection mirrors for obstacle warning systems. We also produce coated panels for head-up displays, laser-based assemblies and systems for distance measuring, the detection and control of drones as well as objectives and prism assemblies for day and night observation.
Business Unit Medical Applications: The Berliner Glas Group is the experienced partner for optical solutions in medical technology, especially in the areas of ophthalmology, microscopy, dental medicine, endoscopy and laboratory analysis and diagnostics. We develop and produce these products in modern clean rooms for international medical device manufacturers. We offer tailor-made solutions, from high-quality optical key components to opto-mechanical assemblies such as beam shaping objectives or autoclavable camera heads and opto-electronic systems such as structured light 3-D scanning systems or LED cold light sources.
Business Unit Semicon: With customer-specific vacuum chucks and ultra-fast electro-static chucks, the Berliner Glas Group provides top yields in the production of high-performance chips, displays and other fragile applications. Our chucking systems are characterized by an extremely high flatness and very low parallelism deviations. In addition, we also offer a wide range of high-precision measuring systems for wafer inspections, which allow measurements beyond the visibility of a microscope. High-precision objectives, collimators and aspherical components round off our range of inspection products.
Business Unit Industrial Solutions: Optical key components, assemblies and systems for industrial applications in space, laser, print or film technology. Core competencies: such as anodic bonding of glass and ceramics to highly stable support materials for free space communication or large-scale cylinder lenses and mirrors used in high-tech lasers for the highest level of cost-efficiency in the processing of materials. Among these, our powerful optics guarantee pin sharp images in print and film technology.
