| Fiber Optic Fault Finders OZ Optics is now offering the Fiber Optic Fault Finder, a simplified version of an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). These Fault Finders can continuously monitor an active fiber optic link without interfering with the communications signal. It does this by transmitting a different wavelength than that used by the network. By transmitting an optical pulse into a fiber and monitoring the returned signals, the Fault Finder can identify the positions of reflections and losses. Unlike an OTDR, which displays the entire waveform, the Fault Finder simply reports attenuating events or reflective events, with a corresponding distant from the Fault Finder for each event. This minimizes the amount of information that needs to be transmitted from the unit to a host computer. Multiple events can be detected and reported within a single link.
Fault Finders can transmit data via either a USB link, a wireless link, or via custom configurations. The wireless link allows the Fault Finder to be installed in a remote location that might otherwise be difficult to access. The wireless link allows the Fault Finder to automatically report problems back to a central office. They can also speed up the work of field technician, as the location of problems can be immediately sent to a laptop computer or smart cell phone, without having to physically connect to the device. | Multi-channel hermetically sealed optical fiber assemblies As part of its continued commitment to customer satisfaction and industry leadership, OZ Optics is pleased to announce that it has extended its product offering of hermetically sealed fiber feedthrus to include assemblies with up to 16 fibers, arranged in a ribbon configuration. This new addition complements very well its current offering that covers an entire spectrum of applications, from 1 fiber to 16 fibers.
OZ Optics has been a world pioneer in this product line, offering standard as well as highly customized solutions to meet the most specialized and demanding applications, ranging from telecomm to aerospace and defense. OZ Optics manufacturing include resistive and programmable inductive heating capabilities, to create the hermetic seal between the optical fiber and a holding element (typically a gold plated Kovar ferrule). Both of these heating technologies can be used to seal fibers using glass solder, thus avoiding the need for expensive fiber metallization, or the more traditional metallic solder to be used with metallized fibers. OZ Optics engineering team will design the product and process that better suits the specific requirements of each application.
OZ Optics manufacturing processes have been designed to yield high quality products that can meet or exceed the most demanding qualification tests, including Telcordia GR-1221. Furthermore, the thousands of assemblies that have been shipped and successfully deployed by our customers over the years have proved the quality and reliability of our proprietary designs and processes.

| Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensors 2009 Frost & Sullivan Award Winning sensor generates & measures stimulated brillouin scattering in optical fibers to provide high-resolution simultaneous measurements of strain and temperature along the entire fiber length. By wrapping or embedding a standard telecom fiber inside a structure such as an oil pipeline, power lines or dam, users can detect when and where the structure is being strained or heated and correct the problem before failure occurs. It is ideal for monitoring large structures including oil & gas pipelines, bridges, power lines, dams, and security fences. The sensor could also be used in detecting fire and corrosion/erosion. |
| Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensors OZ Optics now offers the Foresightä series of fiber optic distributed strain and temperature sensors. The new sensor system provides high resolution and accurate strain and temperature monitoring over very long distances. The sensor uses standard optical telecommunications fiber, thereby leveraging the enormous economies of scale from fiber optic communication networks. The new system is ideal for temperature and strain monitoring of oil & gas pipelines, bridges, dams, security fences and power lines. Brillouin sensors are excellent for detecting corrosion, buckling and micro cracks in large structures.
The new Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensor (DSTS) uses Brillouin scattering in optical fibers to measure changes simultaneously in both temperature and strain along the length of a standard, low-cost optical fiber. By wrapping or embedding a fiber inside a structure such as an oil pipeline or dam, users can detect when the structure is being strained or heated/cooled and allow the problem to be corrected before failure occurs. Such monitoring capability is invaluable in critical structures where failure could represent loss of lives or millions of dollars. The sensing fiber can also be used for telecommunications.
The sensing technology gives both temperature and strain readings along the length of the fiber, with spatial resolution as short as 5cm. Being able to monitor both temperature and strain changes is a key advantage, as it allows one to identify which changes in the strain on the fiber are temperature related, and which are caused by outside stresses. Depending on the configuration selected, the sensor range is up to 40km.
The system is fully compatible with the communications and monitoring solutions found in OZ Optics’ Optical Network Safeguard™ (OZ-Guard) system. This provides wireless communication options for remote installations, automated monitoring, and real-time alerts with GPS coordinates via text message, email, instant message and the web. Escalating alarms, starting with the field engineer and rising to any level specified by the system operator, are a standard feature of the system. |
| High Power Inline Optical Taps/ Power Monitors OZ Optics has developed optical patchcords with built-in directional inline optical taps, specifically for high power applications. Using a revolutionary, patent pending process, optical taps are written directly into the optical fiber, to extract a small portion of the light for power monitoring. Less than 0.1% of the light is tapped from the fiber to a monitor photodiode, allowing one to monitor optical power levels in singlemode and polarization maintaining fibers transmitting several Watts of optical power. Custom assemblies can be designed and manufactured for speciality fibers and OEM applications.
Standard optical taps are unidirectional in nature, providing an output signal for light propagating in the forward direction, but not in the reverse direction. This is ideal when one wants to measure the power in one direction, independent of any reflected or returning signals. Optical taps are available for wavelengths ranging from 325nm to over 2000nm. Contact an OZ Optics representative for technical details. |
| High Power Shutters/Safety Interlocks OZ Optics offers electrically controlled fiber optic shutters. These shutters are designed to work with high power lasers, and are controlled through a simple 12 Volt supply. They are ideal for safety interlocks, remote control systems and industrial laser applications. Input and output fibers are connected to the shutter, which opens or closes to transmit or block the light. An electrical connector gives one the option to link the shutter to a laser’s safety interlock, shutting down a laser should the shutter be closed.
Fiber optic shutters are now offered with sensors. These sensors detect whether or not fibers have been connected to both input and output receptacles. If either receptacle does not have a fiber connected, then the shutter will not open. This safety feature is ideal for fiber laser applications, ensuring that one cannot accidently remove a fiber while light is being transmitted, ensuring a worker’s safety.
Shutters are available for laser wavelengths ranging from 180nm to 2000nm. Both fiber-to-fiber shutters and laser-to-fiber couplers with shutters are available. Systems for 100 Watt CW lasers, and for high power pulsed lasers have been produced. We offer shutters that work with multimode, singlemode and polarization maintaining fibers.
