Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)
Company Description
The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will carry out a ten-year imaging survey in six broad optical bands, with a deep stack reaching r~27.5 over the main survey area of 18,000 square degrees. LSST is the top-ranked large-scale ground-based project for the next decade as recommended by the US National Research Council’s Astronomy and Astrophysics decadal survey (Astro2010). It was recommended as a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Science Foundation (NSF) partnership, with NSF as the lead agency responsible for the telescope facility and data management system and DOE providing the camera and related instrumentation.
The LSST system leverages innovative technology in all subsystems: the camera (3.2 Gigapixels), telescope (simultaneous casting of primary and tertiary mirrors), a 9.6 square degree field of view, and data management (30 Tb of data nightly, nearly instant alerts for transient objects). LSST has attracted over 35 Institutional Members and hundreds of science collaborators. www.lsst.org
